McArthur Hall at Methodist College Belfast

  • M&E consultant: Gillespie & Cummings
  • Mechanical contractor: Scott & Ewing Ltd

McArthur Hall is a Grade B listed building on the Methodist College Belfast site. Completed in 1891, the Hall was designed by Sir Thomas Newenham Deane and his son, Thomas Manly Deane, as a dormitory building for boarding students. In 2010, the boarding departments in McArthur Hall and the Main Building closed, ending a 142-year history of boarding at the College.

The Challenge

In 2017, Woodvale Construction was enlisted to carry out extensive repair work to refurbish the building and preserve its longevity. The building now houses classrooms, a central courtyard and an impressive library. As well as retaining past heritage, renovation of this iconic building will enhance the learning experiences of all Methodist College pupils going forward.

The Solution

Versatile Heating, Cooling & Ventilation were proud to be part of this project, supplying several forms of heating that were sympathetic to the conservation goals of the building, including:
Zehnder multicolumn radiators with feet for freestanding application. A striking volcanic black finish was selected to coordinate with the aesthetic of the refurbished building
Poletti designer valves, which are available in a large range of finishes including cast iron, chrome, brass and antique gold, were selected to coordinate with the chosen radiators
Jaga Built-In DBE radiators were selected as they could be easily concealed behind old timber paneling. This ensured the integrity of the building aesthetic while providing fast and effective heat using low water content heat exchangers
Quartz fan coil units, which provide reliable internal climate control when cooling or heating is required in all applications

We wish the very best of luck to all involved in the refurbishment of McArthur Hall at Methodist College in the upcoming RICS Northern Ireland Awards 2019!
