The project involves the decarbonisation of an existing single-story school building with large classrooms and low ceiling heights. It was identified as part of the Pathfinder Programme for decarbonization and includes significant upgrades to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.

Key upgrades:

  • New windows, insulation, and cladding.
  • Installation of new heat pumps.
  • Customised ventilation solutions using floor-mounted Salutem units and bespoke TBHF Flow and Return configurations, with ducts routed through the roof or exiting above windows where required.

The Challenge

The refurbishment of the single-story school building presented several challenges due to its existing structural constraints. The low ceiling heights, coupled with reinforced concrete ring beams, made it difficult to route ductwork efficiently. Additionally, the low window sill heights required careful planning to optimize the use of vertical space, minimize pipework, and maintain maximum floor-to-sill height. These limitations demanded a highly coordinated approach with the site team to ensure the project was executed efficiently while adhering to the building’s decarbonization objectives.

The Solution

The project was executed using advanced and energy-efficient HVAC solutions, tailored to overcome the structural challenges:

  • Salutem Units: Ideal for floor-mounted installation in classrooms with low ceilings.
  • Runtal Radiators: Chosen for their energy efficiency, durability, and flexibility in design and installation.
  • Maxis: Compact and efficient units supporting the low-profile design requirements.
  • RCP – ZFP Systems: Customised to integrate with existing building features.

By combining innovative HVAC solutions with careful planning and execution, the project not only met its decarbonisation goals but also enhanced the building’s overall functionality and sustainability.
